OBAN RADIO STATION

Is this part of the RAF Oban WT station or is it GPO from post-WWII?

There are some older pictures of this site here.  It seems to have been the receive site for Oban Radio (from the file names on the pictures supplied by BT) though it could still have been an earlier RAF site.  I have not managed to confirm its use by Oban Radio - a retired manager of Oban Radio does not know the site.  The General Post Office bought Connel Airfield some time after WWII and initially operated Oban Radio from a caravan on the airfield.  They had planned to build the station there but then reused some old RAF Nissen huts near Lochan na Beithe.

There are two buildings at approximately NM 86263 31989 - shown as a single building on the 1:10000 map on the RCAHMS WWW site.

There is another building higher up the hill at NM 86357 32062.  There are the remains of some wooden poles lying around near this building.  These are either 10" or 14½" diameter.  Some masts are shown on CANMAP around this building.

More information on Oban Radio GNE here, here and here.
